Two Agawam Firefighters Injured in Ambulance Crash

September 5, 2026 — When Agawam Rescue 1 was hit by another car early on Saturday morning while responding to a mutual-aid EMS request in Springfield, two Agawam firefighter paramedics sustained minor injuries.

The collision happened near the intersection of Boland Way and East Columbus Avenue at around 1:30 in the morning. At the time of the collision, Rescue 1 was not carrying a patient and was moving through traffic without its emergency lights or siren on. Local media outlets also covered the collision.

After receiving treatment for minor injuries at Baystate Noble Hospital in Westfield, the two Agawam firefighters were eventually released.

During the collision, a passenger in the other car was thrown out and taken to a nearby hospital by a Springfield ambulance. At the time of their report, Agawam Fire personnel were unaware of her condition.

After being detained by Springfield police, the driver of the second car was later arrested by Chicopee police for alleged violations related to an earlier incident in Chicopee. The driver was recognized and further charges pertaining to the earlier police pursuit were described in later reports.

Agawam Rescue 1, which had only been in operation for roughly two weeks and had been bought brand-new in 2026 for over $400,000, was also damaged in the collision. The ambulance will be out of commission for about three months until repairs are made, according to fire authorities.
