STURBRIDGE, Mass. (Aug. 8, 2025) — Firefighters in Sturbridge extinguished a garbage truck fire Friday after a compacted lithium-ion battery ignited the load, officials said.
The fire began when the crushed battery went into thermal runaway, releasing heat and gases that spread flames through the truck’s compartment.
Crews were able to put out the fire quickly before it grew into a larger hazard. No injuries were reported.
Fire officials reminded residents that lithium-ion batteries should not be discarded with regular trash. They advised taking the devices to a hazardous materials site or following manufacturer instructions for disposal.
