HAMBURG, N.Y. (Sept. 9, 2025) — Scranton firefighters and local officials spent more than an hour Tuesday freeing a dog whose paw became trapped in a bathtub drain at the Lincoln Square Apartments.
The unusual rescue involved firefighters, the Town of Hamburg Dog Control Officer and building maintenance staff. Crews gained access from multiple angles, cutting through a kitchen wall and into the ceiling of a lower apartment.
The dog’s paw was hooked inside the drain in a hyperflexion position. Fire chiefs worked with the DCO to keep the pug calm while a protective plastic barrier was placed around the leg. Maintenance staff then used an oscillating saw to weaken the brass fitting before firefighters pried it open.
Veterinary sedation was used to ease the dog during the final stages of the rescue. Officials said the animal is expected to recover.
