STURBRIDGE, Mass. (Aug. 24, 2025) — On-duty personnel with the Sturbridge Fire Department continued their training program Sunday, with Firefighter Cayla Hurley advancing to the role of motor pump operator.

The position, also known as driver or chauffeur, requires the firefighter to supply water to attack hoses, adjust pressures based on hose size or building elevation, and manage multiple hoselines during fire operations. In areas without hydrants, the operator also coordinates water shuttles from tankers.

Training took place at the department’s drill yard using a wooden nozzle prop built by firefighters for hands-on exercises.
