STURBRIDGE, Mass. (Aug. 20, 2025) — Firefighter Cayla Hurley spent part of Wednesday training on hydrant operations, practicing how to establish a water supply during fire responses.
The hydrant position is typically handled by the fourth firefighter on an engine company. The role involves deploying a hydrant bag, assist valve and supply hose, then connecting to a hydrant before rejoining the crew at the fire scene.
Officials said that while two-thirds of Sturbridge has no hydrant system, firefighters must remain proficient in multiple water supply methods to adapt to different parts of town.
