STURBRIDGE, Mass. (Aug. 10, 2025) — Firefighters quickly knocked down a blaze in a Snell Street apartment building Sunday evening, containing the fire to its room of origin, officials said.
The alarm was received at 7:56 p.m. for possible smoke at 9 Snell Street, where residents had already begun evacuating. Engine 2 responded with three on-duty firefighters within 90 seconds of the call and arrived four minutes later to find smoke showing from multiple windows of the 2½-story building.
A second alarm was struck, bringing mutual aid to the scene and additional crews for station coverage. Firefighters deployed two hoselines and secured a water supply, while teams searched apartments, ventilated the building and checked for extension.
The blaze was brought under control quickly, officials said. The American Red Cross and Sturbridge Animal Control assisted displaced residents. Sturbridge Police, Rehab 78 and area mutual aid departments also supported the operation.
No injuries were reported. The cause is under investigation by the Sturbridge Fire Investigation Unit.
