Firefighters locate underground blaze in Owls Head

OWLS HEAD, Maine (Aug. 17, 2025) — Crews discovered an underground fire Sunday evening just before a downpour moved through the area, officials said.
Using a thermal imaging camera, firefighters detected hotspots ranging from 200 to more than 400 degrees, spreading through moss and dry root systems.
The department said the rainfall could help slow the fire’s spread, but reminded residents not to hesitate in calling for assistance.
