Late-Night Knockdown at El Charro: Fast Action Brings Commercial Fire Under Control in Fruitvale

Oakland, NJ - Oakland Fire Department units responded late Friday night to a reported commercial structure fire at El Charro Supermercado in the 1500 block of Fruitvale Avenue, where heavy fire conditions were encountered upon arrival at the storefront occupancy.


Initial dispatch was received at approximately 11:58 PM on August 28, with multiple engine companies and truck resources assigned to the incident due to the commercial nature of the structure and potential for rapid fire spread. Firefighters arrived to find a working fire involving the supermarket, with crews immediately initiating suppression operations and search assignments.


The incident, which occurred in Fruitvale, Oakland, escalated quickly before being brought under control through coordinated interior and exterior firefighting efforts. Crews worked to contain fire extension within the structure while protecting adjacent exposures in the busy commercial corridor.


Engine companies including E12, E13, E16, E18, E4, along with Fire Investigation Unit 1 and Truck companies T1, T2, and T6, operated on scene to achieve fire knockdown and complete primary overhaul.


Fire conditions were stabilized, and the incident was placed under control shortly before 12:45 AM. No additional details regarding injuries were provided at the time. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
