On Monday, August 25, 2025, at approximately 8:36 p.m., the East Putnam Fire Department responded to a first-alarm garage fire at 230 Providence Pike. Within 10 minutes, Engine Tanker 179 arrived to find heavy smoke showing from a two-story attached garage. All residents had safely exited prior to fire department arrival.
Firefighters deployed both a 1.75-inch crosslay and a 2.5-inch attack line, knocking down the bulk of the flames within minutes. Additional crews conducted searches, overhauled hot spots, and confirmed that the fire had not extended into the residence. Because the fire occurred outside the hydrant district, East Thompson’s Engine 185 staged at the Tractor Supply hydrant to prepare for tanker shuttle operations. However, due to the swift knockdown, very little water was needed.
Crews remained on scene until approximately 10:45 p.m. The garage sustained significant fire damage, while the residence experienced moderate smoke damage. Three residents were displaced and are being assisted by family. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Route 44 was closed for the duration of the incident and has since reopened. The Putnam Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
The East Putnam Fire Department received mutual aid assistance from the Attawaugan Fire Department, Community Fire Company, Danielson Fire Department/South Killingly FAST, East Thompson Volunteer Fire Department, Dudley Fire Department FAST, Putnam Fire Department, Thompson Fire Engine Company, and Putnam EMS.
