In August, the department responded to 21 calls for service, making it a busy month for our small volunteer team. The call breakdown is as follows:

  • 4 Woods Fires (1 Bucksport, 3 Castine – three-day tour)
  • 2 Building Fires (1 Surry, 1 Bucksport)
  • 2 Motor Vehicle Accidents with Injuries
  • 2 Outside/Trash Fires
  • 2 Downed Trees
  • 2 Station Coverage/Standby
  • 1 Carbon Monoxide Incident
  • 1 Electrical Problem (fire out on arrival)
  • 1 Alarm Activation (malfunction due to water intrusion)
  • 1 Smoke Investigation
  • 1 Threat of Fire
  • 1 Dispatched & Cancelled enroute
  • 1 Vehicle Fire (Bucksport)

With severe drought conditions raising fire danger throughout the area, many of these incidents required extensive overhaul, water, and digging out.

Beyond emergency calls, OFD stayed active in the community. We hosted the August Hancock County Firefighters Association meeting in our new building, which received much positive feedback. The department also welcomed a new member and celebrated a promotion from junior to adult firefighter.

Training remains a priority. Three firefighters are preparing to attend the Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) to qualify as apparatus drivers. Meanwhile, several members are close to completing their district firefighter class, bringing them one step closer to interior firefighter certification.

Looking ahead, we hope to see you at Orland River Day! Join us in the parade and stop by the community center for the Touch-a-Truck event—we’d love to talk with you.
