This morning, a dozen firefighters spent more than two hours battling the spread of an improperly—and illegally—set campfire. With the ground extremely dry, even a small spark can quickly grow into a dangerous wildfire.
When digging a campfire pit, remember that duff is not dirt. Duff is highly flammable material made of decaying leaves, needles, and roots. A safe fire pit must be dug down to bare mineral soil, and when extinguishing, you must drench both the fire and the surrounding ground thoroughly.
Any fire set on property you do not own is strictly prohibited. Violators will face prosecution. Help us protect our community and natural resources by following the law and practicing fire safety at all times.
