The Franklin Fire Department announced it has begun outfitting its non-structural members with alternative personal protective equipment (PPE) that does not contain PFAS chemicals, often referred to as “forever chemicals.”

Traditional structural firefighting gear includes PFAS in its layers, which have been linked to long-term health risks. The newly selected PPE provides protection appropriate for non-structural duties at about one-third the cost of traditional gear. This allows the department to protect its members while also being responsible stewards of public funds.

The initiative was made possible through capital budget planning in cooperation with the Fire Department, Board of Finance, and Board of Selectmen.

The department extended thanks to John Fratus and MES Equipment for their assistance in making the transition possible.
