Portland Firefighters Complete Surface Rescue Swimmers Training
Last week, several members of the Portland Fire Department participated in a three-day, in-house Surface Rescue Swimmers course designed to strengthen the department’s water rescue capabilities.
The program followed NFPA standards and department guidelines, beginning with classroom instruction and pool-based confidence drills before moving into open-ocean scenarios. Training covered life-saving techniques, rope and knot applications, swimmer deployment from both shore and vessels, and methods for assisting distressed individuals in difficult conditions.
This hands-on training enhances the department’s ability to respond swiftly and safely to water-related emergencies—protecting both our firefighters and the community we serve.
