Kayaker Rescued After Overturning in Fore River
Just before 7:00 PM yesterday, crews from the Portland and South Portland Fire Departments responded to reports of a kayaker in distress near 219 High Street in South Portland after his kayak overturned.
Portland’s Marine 1, staffed with personnel from Ladder 1, Rescue 1, and Medcu 5, crossed the Fore River to assist South Portland Engine 48, Ambulance 42, and Car 42 already on scene. Two rescue swimmers from Portland’s Rescue 1 entered the water from Marine 1, while South Portland deployed a swimmer from shore.
Rescue swimmers quickly reached the man, who was exhausted and clinging to his overturned kayak. He was safely brought back to shore and evaluated by South Portland Ambulance 42.
Thanks to the fast and coordinated response of both departments, the kayaker was rescued without further incident.
