Catskill Firefighters Respond to CSX Train-Vehicle Collision

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

CATSKILL, NY — August 25, 2026 —  A CSX locomotive struck a passenger car at a non-gated railroad crossing behind Haines Garage on Tuesday morning, prompting Catskill firemen to react.

The car crossed the crossing area in front of the incoming train at around 10:31 a.m., which is when the crash happened.

The locomotive hit the car. After the crash, both the driver and the passenger seemed to have minor injuries.

About an eighth of a mile from the crossing, the train's lead engine brought it to a complete stop.

The event brought to light the extra safety measures needed at train crossings without gates or warning arms. Before continuing, drivers approaching an ungated crossing should stop, look, and listen for incoming trains. Catskill Fire Company reminded motorists that trains require significant distance to stop and cannot stop quickly when a vehicle enters their path.
