TRUMBULL, Conn. (Aug. 7, 2025) — Nichols firefighters handled two overnight emergencies Thursday, first responding to a car crash and later extinguishing a basement fire on Nichols Avenue.
The first call came at 12:30 a.m. when crews were dispatched to a two-car crash on Route 8. Firefighters remained on scene about 45 minutes to assist EMS and secure the roadway.
At 2:21 a.m., Nichols firefighters, along with mutual aid from Trumbull Center and Long Hill, were called to the 2900 block of Nichols Avenue for a reported basement fire. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and confirmed a working fire.
Firefighters quickly entered the home, extinguished the flames, and completed primary searches. Engine 305 and Truck 304 attacked the fire, while other units provided water supply, ventilation, and rapid intervention. Trumbull Center assisted with rehabilitation operations.
Nichols Car 1 served as incident commander, and Long Hill Car 1 handled operations. The Trumbull Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause.
No injuries were reported. Officials said the residents were alerted by a smoke detector at the top of the basement stairs.
“Smoke detectors save lives,” the department said in a statement.
