ABINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS (PLYMOUTH COUNTY) - Around 1845 hours on the evening of Sunday, August 4, 2024 the Abington Fire Department responded to multiple calls reporting a building fire at 439 Washington Street. Companies arrived to find an exterior gas fed fire on the "B" side of the one and a half story wood framed occupied group home. The specialized group home occupied 5 residents and multiple staff members. Staff members were able to safely remove the occupants, some bed confined, prior to the fire departments arrival.
A working fire was requested bringing mutual aid from Rockland and Whitman to the scene. Companies stretched a large line with a Blitz gun and several hand lines to protect the building which was a close exposure to the gas fed fire. National Grid responded within 45-minutes and was able to shut the gas feed off from the street. No extension was found, and no injuries were reported.
Several of the occupants were transported to area hospitals, while others stayed with family for the evening. The fire is believed to have begun during a passing thunderstorm with strong lightning in the area.
