NORTH HERO, Vt. (Sunday, Aug. 24, 2025) — Firefighters in North Hero responded to two separate water rescues over the weekend after boaters and canoeists became stranded on Lake Champlain islands, officials said.
In the first incident, North Hero and Grand Isle fire crews assisted after a boat took on water and swamped near Knights Island. The occupants made it safely to shore before being rescued.
On Sunday morning, two people and two dogs were rescued from Dameas Island after their canoe swamped. Red Cap Marine and Salvage contacted North Hero firefighters for assistance.
Officials reminded boaters that lake levels are extremely low and that winds can become dangerous as fall approaches.
