Over the weekend, the Boothbay Fire Department responded to two separate cooking fire incidents on local islands.

The first occurred on Fort Island in the Damariscotta River, on State of Maine land. With the help of residents and fishermen Chuck Wagstaff and Jody Durgan, firefighters were able to access the site by boat and contain the blaze. Their assistance was critical in preventing what could have been a much larger operation. The fire ultimately burned an area approximately 100 by 100 feet. Additional support was provided through the use of the R/V Clarice from Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences.

Later that night, at around 11:00 p.m., a report came in of a large fire on White Island, visible from Ocean Point. The U.S. Coast Guard transported six Boothbay firefighters to the island, where they confirmed the cooking fire had already burned out upon arrival.

The Boothbay Fire Department reminds all outdoor enthusiasts to keep cooking fires small, and to make sure they are completely extinguished before leaving camp.
