AMHERST, Maine (Thursday, Aug. 14, 2025) — Firefighters contained a brush and slash pile fire in Amherst on Thursday after it spread into nearby woods, officials said.

The Aurora Volunteer Fire Department responded with assistance from the Mariaville Volunteer Fire/Rescue Department and the Maine Forest Rangers. Crews found the fire had been smoldering for several days and had burned into the ground.

With the help of Scott Beede and his excavator, responders were able to confine the fire to a small area. Firefighters said they planned to return Friday to check for hot spots.

No injuries were reported.
