One dead after boat overturns on Flagstaff Lake in Eustis

EUSTIS, Maine (Saturday, Aug. 30, 2025) — Emergency crews rushed to Flagstaff Lake on Saturday afternoon after a boat overturned near Cathedral Pines Campground, leaving occupants trapped beneath the vessel, officials said.

The Eustis Fire Department said personnel arrived within two minutes of the 1:20 p.m. call, established command and declared a mass-casualty incident while launching water rescue operations. Utility 2, Rescue 1 and Marine 1 responded, staffed with both firefighters and EMS providers.

Mutual aid was provided by Carrabassett Valley Fire Department, LifeFlight of Maine and Anson-Madison Ambulance Service. Patient care was transferred to EMS agencies, while Eustis firefighters remained on scene to support a law enforcement investigation by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and Maine Warden Service.

All personnel and apparatus cleared the scene by 6 p.m.

“Eustis Fire Department sends our sincere condolences to all that were impacted by today’s events,” the department said in a statement.
