HARRISON, Maine (Saturday, Aug. 9, 2025) — Harrison Fire & Rescue members completed a two-day large animal rescue course that taught firefighters and local responders specialized techniques for helping horses and other livestock in emergencies.

The training, held Aug. 1 and Aug. 9, was led by instructor Vicki Schmidt with support from the Cumberland County Animal Rescue Team, Harrison’s animal control officer and local horse owners. Tripp Crest Farm and the Western Maine Firefighters Association sponsored the program.

Day one focused on classroom instruction and demonstrations at the fire station. The second day provided hands-on practice at High View Farm, where responders applied techniques and tools directly with horses.

Fire officials said the training improves safety for both rescuers and animals when emergencies involve large animals.
