HUDSON, NY — August 16, 2026 — At at 4:40 p.m., Columbia County 911 called the City of Hudson Fire Department to a reported lawnmower battery fire behind a home on Green Street. The harm was lessened because the battery was being charged outside the house. Firefighters discovered that the fire had only spread to the battery and charger and had not spread to the house.

Although the incident was swiftly contained, the agency pointed out that firemen had recently attended to two additional battery-related incidents. The agency said that one happened in a nearby fire area and resulted in significant fire damage, while another involved a garage on Fairview Avenue.

The department is urging residents to use caution when charging lithium-ion batteries used in lawn equipment, e-bikes and other power equipment.

Fire-safety guidance from the National Volunteer Fire Council and National Fire Protection Association recommends following a Buy, Charge and Recycle Safely approach. Lithium-ion batteries can overheat and ignite when they are damaged, improperly charged or used with incompatible equipment.
