LITCHFIELD, Conn. (Friday, Aug. 22, 2025) — Firefighters rescued two pets from a house fire on Meadow Street Friday night, including a dog that required resuscitation before being transported to an emergency veterinarian, officials said.

The fire was reported at 8:53 p.m. at 132 Meadow St. Crews from Litchfield, Bantam and Torrington fire departments arrived to find heavy smoke on the second floor. Two hose lines were stretched, and Engine 35 established a water supply from a nearby hydrant.

Firefighters discovered flames in the floor and walls of a second-floor room. The blaze was extinguished and followed by ventilation and overhaul.

A dog and a cat were removed from the home. The cat was stable, while the dog was resuscitated on scene by Litchfield Volunteer Ambulance and Bantam Fire members before being taken to a veterinary hospital.

All crews cleared by 10:45 p.m. The cause remains under investigation by the Litchfield Fire Marshal’s Office.

Responding units included Litchfield Fire, Bantam Fire Company, Torrington Fire Department, East Litchfield Fire Co., Northfield Volunteer Fire Company, Goshen Fire Company and Thomaston Volunteer Fire Department, along with Litchfield Volunteer Ambulance.

Officials urged residents to test smoke detectors, replace batteries regularly and maintain family escape plans.
