CATSKILL, N.Y. (Friday, Aug. 1, 2025) — A man was rescued late Friday night after falling several stories into a silo at the long-abandoned Lehigh Cement plant on Route 9W, officials said.
Catskill Fire and Ambulance responded to the scene, where a rope rescue team from Kingston, Palenville and Centerville-Cedar Grove fire departments was called in to assist. Crews successfully removed the victim, who sustained injuries, though his condition was not immediately released.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police assisted on scene. Malden West Camp firefighters established a landing zone for a medical helicopter, and Athens and Leeds fire departments covered Catskill during the prolonged operation.
Officials noted the plant has been closed for years, with overgrowth and vandalism making the site especially hazardous. “These old places are very dangerous and the public is forbidden to be at them,” the department said in a statement.
