CORTLANDVILLE, N.Y. (Friday, Aug. 8, 2025) — A dump truck fire near the intersection of Luker Road and Route 281 briefly shut down traffic Friday morning before firefighters brought the blaze under control, officials said.

The Cortlandville Fire Department was dispatched around 6:45 a.m. and arrived to find flames in the engine compartment extending into the cab. Quick action by bystanders and Assistant Chief Casterline of the City of Cortland Fire Department knocked down much of the fire with extinguishers before crews arrived.

Cortlandville firefighters extinguished remaining flames and ensured the vehicle was safe. The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.

No injuries were reported.
