Ramp Engulfed on I-291: South Windsor Crews Stop SUV Fire in Its Tracks in Hartford County

South Windsor, CT - South Windsor Fire Department units responded to a vehicle fire on the I-291 westbound entrance ramp from Route 5 (John Fitch Boulevard) in South Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut, after reports of a car fire on the ramp.
On August 18, 2026, just after 8:00 p.m., crews were dispatched while operating during their weekly training, prompting an immediate response from Engine 3, Squad 2, FP9, and Car 10.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a sport utility vehicle heavily involved in fire. Crews quickly deployed handlines and initiated an aggressive fire attack, bringing the blaze under control and preventing extension beyond the vehicle.
Operations were conducted with attention to traffic safety on the ramp, which was temporarily shut down for approximately 30 minutes while crews extinguished the fire and cleared the scene.
No injuries were reported, and units successfully contained the incident before reopening the roadway.
