One dead in Cicero house fire; firefighters face hoarding conditions
CICERO, N.Y. (Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025) — A man died late Sunday night after a fire tore through a one-story home on Caughdenoy Road, where firefighters encountered heavy smoke and hoarding conditions inside, officials said.
The Cicero Fire Department was dispatched at 11:59 p.m. after reports of smoke coming from a garage in the 5700 block, according to Onondaga County 911. A sheriff’s deputy nearby confirmed smoke showing as the first units responded.
Cicero Car 1 arrived at 12:06 a.m. Monday, confirmed a working fire and transmitted a Signal 99 alarm. Cicero Engine 10, Clay Ladder 3 and North Syracuse Truck 1 secured hydrants and stretched two hand lines to the residence. Crews attempting entry at the front were forced to use a side door into the attached garage, where they encountered heavy fire, high heat, no visibility and cluttered conditions throughout the home.
Ventilation was established and additional hand lines deployed as firefighters conducted searches. A victim was located inside but, despite efforts by fire, EMS and police at the scene, the individual was pronounced dead.
Fire crews remained on scene for several hours to ensure full extinguishment and complete overhaul.
Officials said their thoughts and prayers remain with the victim’s family and friends. Assisting agencies included multiple neighboring fire departments and emergency services.
