Colchester, VT – Just after 1:00 p.m. on 12 August 2025, the Colchester Fire Department, along with St. Michael's College Fire & Rescue, was dispatched to Saint Michael’s College, 22 Campus Road, for an activated fire alarm.

Upon arrival, crews observed no visible fire, but what appeared to be smoke was seen emanating from a basement vent. Further assessment at the basement staircase revealed zero-visibility conditions. Incident Command immediately upgraded the call to a structure fire response and requested mutual aid from the Vermont Air National Guard Fire Department (VTANG).

Fire crews entered the basement under zero visibility but were unable to locate a heat source. Continued investigation determined the incident to be a hazardous materials situation involving the uncontrolled release of refrigerant. In response, Incident Command adjusted operational tactics and requested the Vermont Hazardous Materials Response Team to the scene.

Through a coordinated, multi-agency effort, the hazard was safely mitigated and the scene declared under control. All occupants had safely evacuated the building prior to mitigation efforts.

The Colchester Fire Department extends its gratitude to the Milton Fire Department for providing station coverage during the incident and responding to additional community calls. Thanks are also extended to the Colchester Rescue Squad, Colchester Police Department, and Saint Michael’s College staff for their assistance and support throughout the operation.
