MASTIC, N.Y- On July 13th at about 4:45 A.M., the Suffolk County 9-1-1 Center received a call for a report of a vehicle crash with fire in the Mastic area. The Mastic FD was quickly dispatched to the scene, as were officers from Suffolk County Police’s 7th PCT. On arrival at Babylon St. & Shinnecock Ave., Assistant Chief Rudy Sunderman {5-12-31} found an auto well-involved with flames going up the pole the vehicle had struck. Assistant Fire Chief Sunderman requested that the first due engine crew immediately stretch a line and go to work.
Firefighters went to work to quickly knock the bulk of the fire down within moments of arriving on scene and continued to operate to ensure the fire was fully out and there were no hot spots. While they were operating, police and other rescue personnel checked on the driver of the other vehicle to ensure they were not injured. According to officials, no serious injuries were reported. Firefighters operated on scene for approximately 45 minutes. The scene was turned over to Suffolk Police to continue their investigation and to await a tow truck to respond.
