Basement Smoke Scare Quickly Contained on Brookside Avenue
On Sunday evening around 8:45 p.m., the Ho-Ho-Kus Fire Department was dispatched to a report of smoke coming from the basement of a two-family residence on Brookside Avenue. Arriving police officers confirmed the smoke condition and ensured that all tenants had safely evacuated.
A Working Fire assignment was requested as a precaution, bringing in an additional engine from Ridgewood and a ladder truck from Wyckoff. Upon investigation, firefighters discovered the source: a sump pump placed in a plastic container had overheated while being misused to drain a washing machine.
The situation was quickly brought under control, and the assignment was scaled back. Units cleared the scene shortly after.
We extend our gratitude to the Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department and Ridgewood Professional Firefighters FMBA Local 47 for their rapid response and support.
