Margate firefighters rescue 16 people, 3 dogs during Hurricane Erin flooding

MARGATE CITY, N.J. (Friday, Aug. 22, 2025) — Firefighters in Margate City conducted multiple rescues Thursday night as Hurricane Erin brought heavy flooding, officials said.
Crews responded to six vehicle rescues in flooded waters, assisting a total of 16 people and three dogs. Residents rescued included families of two to five people, according to the city’s fire department.
Firefighters also evacuated two restaurants — Soffias, where 30 people were sheltered, and Tomatoes, where four people were stranded. Of the 34 evacuees, 16 were transported home by fire crews, while others walked from Station 1 on South Washington Avenue.
In addition to rescues, crews handled a gas leak, an underground transformer fire and an electrical fire in a business during the storm.
