Sprinklers contain fire at Rug Mill Apartments in Freehold
FREEHOLD, N.J. (Tuesday, July 15, 2025) — Residents of the Rug Mill Apartments were evacuated early Tuesday after sprinklers contained a fire in the building’s garbage chute, officials said.
The Freehold Fire Department was dispatched just before 6 a.m. for a fire alarm. County Dispatch then reported active fire and smoke on the first floor, prompting Assistant Chief 15-67, Michael O’Grady, to call for mutual aid from East Freehold Fire Company and Freehold Township Independent Fire Company No. 1.
Crews arrived to find the fire suppressed by sprinklers but heavy smoke throughout the building. Extensive ventilation was required, and Morganville Independent Fire Company was requested to provide a high-powered fan unit.
No injuries were reported. Police and EMS units from Freehold Borough and Freehold Township also assisted at the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
