DUNELLEN, N.J. (Tuesday, July 29, 2025) — Firefighters in Dunellen brought a burning garbage load under control early Tuesday after a truck dumped its contents in a parking lot, officials said.

The fire was reported around 4 a.m. on the 100 block of North Avenue. While en route, crews learned the truck driver had emptied the burning load in the Rock Ice parking lot, where it was free burning.

Chief 1 arrived and confirmed a working fire with no exposure concerns. Engine 3 crews quickly knocked down most of the flames with a master stream and tank water, while Engine 2 established a permanent water supply.

Firefighters then advanced a 1 3/4-inch attack line to complete extinguishment. Dunellen Department of Public Works used a backhoe to pull apart the debris pile to ensure all hot spots were out. Green Brook Fire also assisted on scene.

Middlesex County HazMat confirmed there were no hazardous materials present. The Middlesex County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause.
