VERGENNES, Vt., Aug. 11, 2025 – The City of Vergennes Fire Department took advantage of a rare opportunity Wednesday night, conducting a controlled burn of the city’s old salt shed before its scheduled replacement.
Built entirely of natural wood and surrounded by sand and asphalt, the structure provided an ideal and safe setting for live fire training in Vermont. Firefighters practiced reading and interpreting fire behavior, understanding smoke movement and patterns, and handling hoses and nozzles under realistic conditions.
Department officials said live burn opportunities like this are uncommon but invaluable for keeping skills sharp, ensuring crews remain prepared to protect the community.
