Demarest - Firefighters battled a fast moving fire late Tuesday afternoon as a large column of smoke could be seen throughout Northern Bergen County. At 3:43pm, Demarest Police Department began receiving multiple 911 calls for a house fire on Woodland Rd. First arriving PD officers reported a well involved two story home with reports of possible entrapment. Officers attempted to gain entry but was pushed back by heavy smoke. Cresskill Fire, followed by Demarest, Haworth and Harrington Park fire arrived on scene and went into a defensive operation with a deck gun to knock down the heavy fire while crews geared up to make an interior attack. A second alarm followed by a third alarm were transmitted as heavy fire began to vent though the roof. Crews stretched two 1.75" hand lines though the front and side doors to make a push on the fire. Interior crews were able to knock down the heavy fire conditions as additional firefighters searched the home for any residents. It took fire fighters a half an hour to bring the fire under control. The homeowners arrived shortly after and reported the house was empty at the time of the fire. One firefighter and 3 police officers were transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Mutual aid from Cresskill, Haworth, Closter, Harrington Park, Dumont, Tenafly, Oradell, and Norwood assisted on scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
