Following strong storms, the River Edge Fire Department responded to a reported house fire in the vicinity of 5th Avenue and Wales Avenue on July 4.
Crews discovered that live electrical lines had been pushed onto a house by a falling tree, igniting a fire. The electrical issue also caused basement fires in two nearby residences.
Because energized lines were still down on the property and on the road, firefighters had limited access to the main fire. Before operations could resume, utility crews were required to secure the electricity.
Mutual-aid organizations arrived in River Edge when the event was elevated to a third alert. After sustaining a non-life-threatening injury, one firefighter was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center for assessment.
