Haz-Mat Investigation Identifies Hydrogen Gas Source
Colchester, VT - Colchester Fire Department firefighters responded to a reported gas odor at a commercial building on Hercules Drive and began an interior investigation with atmospheric monitoring equipment.
Crews detected elevated readings initially believed to be carbon monoxide, prompting further investigation of a nearby business where additional readings were identified. Due to the unknown source and involvement of multiple buildings, assistance was requested from the Vermont Hazardous Materials Response Team.
Through continued monitoring and specialized analysis, the source was determined to be hydrogen gas released during forklift battery charging, which had caused false readings on standard carbon monoxide sensors. The incident highlighted the importance of specialized resources and expertise when dealing with potential hazardous materials situations.
