VERGENNES, VT – At approximately 10:40 a.m. on July 16th, the Vergennes Fire Department was dispatched to a report of an excavator on fire about a mile into the woods in Monkton. Challenging terrain, dense brush, and high temperatures made access to the scene difficult.
Vergennes Fire responded with its UTV to transport personnel and equipment to the remote location. This marked the first operational use of the UTV in an active fire scenario.
Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke and high heat coming from the machine. Firefighters quickly established attack lines and worked to extinguish the fire and cool surrounding hot spots.
Mutual aid played a key role in the response. Departments from across the region worked together to bring the situation under control, demonstrating effective coordination and teamwork.
Responding agencies included Vergennes Fire Department, Monkton Volunteer Fire Department, Charlotte Fire and Rescue Services, Bristol Rescue Squad, Shelburne Communications Center, and Hinesburg Fire Department.
