When the tones dropped at 10:40 a.m. on July 16th, the call was clear — an excavator was on fire roughly a mile deep in the woods of Monkton. With thick brush, steep trails, and sweltering heat, this was no ordinary run.

Vergennes Fire rolled out with our UTV, knowing this would be its first true trial under real fire conditions. The mission: get crews and gear to a remote, burning machine fast enough to make a difference.

The UTV tore through rugged terrain, bouncing over roots and weaving through narrow openings until the fire scene came into view — heavy smoke rising from twisted metal, heat shimmering in the air. Firefighters got to work, coordinating attack lines and cooling hot spots in the oppressive summer conditions.

This was more than just a fire knockdown — it was proof of why mutual aid matters. Agencies from across the region moved as one, each crew playing their role to bring the situation under control. On this day, trust, teamwork, and readiness were on full display.

On scene and in the fight:

Vergennes Fire Department, Monkton Volunteer Fire Department, Charlotte Fire and Rescue Services, Bristol Rescue Squad, Shelburne Communications Center, and Hinesburg Fire Department.
