Improper Disposed Fireworks Causes A Garage Fire In Green Island

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

On July 4, 2025, the Green Island Fire Department, Cohoes Fire Department, Watervliet Fire Department, and the Watervliet Arsenal Fire Department responded to 500 River Edge Apartments for multiple calls reporting a garage fire. The caller stated smoke was coming from the garage. The first arriving engine on scene had fire pushing from the garage and transmitted the signal thirty. The officer on the rig conducted a full walk around of the garage and had smoke pushing from the eaves of the garage.

Firefighters deployed an inch and three-quarter hand line to the front door of the garage and made entry and discovered they had a working dumpster fire inside of the garage that had extended into the roof. The next arriving truck company arrived on scene and went to work cutting the doors off of the garage to gain entry as the fire had extended into the roof area. An additional hand line was deployed, and command placed a general recall in for staffing for both Green Island, Cohoes, and the city of Watervliet. Firefighters were able to knock down the heavy fire condition in the first garage bay and began to cut open the additional garages as they had a heavy smoke condition throughout the structure. Firefighters opened each garage section one by one and began to pull the ceilings and utilize a hand line to knock down the additional fire that had spread to the roof.

Firefighters worked on scene for an extended period of time conducting extensive overhaul. The fire chief arrived on scene and began to conduct their investigation into the fire. No injuries were reported and the building suffered severe damage. The fire was determined to be caused by fireworks improperly disposed of in the dumpster.
