On July 25th, with temperatures at about 100 degrees, a blaze possibly started by an exploding propane tank heavily damaged a Maywood home. Firefighters were dispatched at approximately 2:30 PM to 37 Terrace Ave. Heavy fire was consuming a rear deck and extending into the second floor and attic of the dwelling putting up a large column of smoke. A second alarm was quickly called as companies confirmed all residents were out and started their attack. The heat soon became a serious problem as one firefighter went down. All members were withdrawn, but soon re-entered. Again a member collapsed and companies were again evacuated. EMS treated those in need as others once again went interior.
All fire was knocked down and extensive overhaul commenced. At least five firefighters were transported to Hackensack University Medical Center with heat injuries. One was reported to have been struck by a falling air conditioner. None of the injuries were considered serious. The cause is under investigation, but may be connected to the propane tank. Mutual aid from Rochelle Park, Hackensack, Paramus, Garfield, Saddle Brook, River Edge, Elmwood Park, Lodi, and Hasbrouck Heights assisted at the scene.
