Multiple people and pets were rescued from a third-alarm fire at an apartment complex building on Monday, July 4.
While numerous fire departments in Saratoga County were participating in the Fourth of July Parade, departments were dispatched for a reported structure fire at an apartment complex at 207 Mohawk Terrace in the West Crescent Fire District, just after 1:00 p.m.
While crews began to respond from the parade, chiefs enroute to the call could see the smoke, one of them seeing it from Colonie.
911 dispatchers began receiving numerous additional phone calls reporting the fire and received additional info that there were victims trapped on balconies on the third floor of the building.
Arriving fire chiefs and sheriff’s deputies arrived to heavy smoke and fire pushing from the building with multiple people trapped on the balconies.
As fire crews were making their way from the parade, the fire chiefs and police on scene were able to secure a ladder and begin rescuing people from the balconies.
An engine arrived and crews began setting up additional ladders to assist in rescuing victims.
A third alarm was transmitted, bringing in additional resources from all over the area.
Firefighters battled heavy fire in the hot summer day for numerous hours.
Once the bulk of the fire was knocked down, crews began opening up and hitting hotspots and hidden pockets of fire.
Agencies assigned to the call included West Crescent, Vischer Ferry, Clifton Park, Halfmoon-Waterford, Jonesville, Hillcrest, Waterford, Round Lake, Maplewood, Mechanicville, Boght, Colonie Village, Northside, Latham fire departments with assistance from Clifton Park EMS, Saratoga County Sheriff’s Departments, Saratoga County Fire Investigators and New York State Fire.
After making numerous searches it appears all residents were able to get out.
Numerous people were treated on scene for smoke inhalation.
Several cats were also removed after the fire was knocked down and were returned to their owners.
The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.
