The Haddon Township Police Department held their first Jr. Police Academy from July 7-11, 2025. The week was designed to give the youth a brief look at what a police officer may experience from starting in the police academy to some real life encounters patrolling the streets. The kids had hands on training and experiences as well as classroom learning. The daily activities started with physical training, military style drills, and raising the American flag ceremony. Each day had special activities and events which included visits to the HT Police Department, the Westmont Fire Company, a visit from the New Jersey State Police helicopter and crew, the Camden County Sheriff's Emergency Response Team which included demonstrations from the Bomb Squad and two K-9s who are trained to detect explosives and narcotics. The mounted unit brought a horse to town to visit the Academy goers and there were other activities that included firearms safety and simulations, simulated suspect encounters and foot pursuits, as well as an internet safety presentation. The kids worked up quite an appetite during the week and lunches were provided by local Haddon Township restaurants. The week ended with a graduation ceremony where parents, family, and friends were invited to see each recruit graduate, acknowledge special accomplishments, and to see and hear of some of the highlights of the week. It was a great experience for the Township’s youth and the police officer instructors as well.
One of the many activities planned was a visit to Haddon Township’s Westmont Fire Company for a tour, equipment demonstrations, and getting to use the fire hoses. Westmont Fire Lt. Kyle Graeber and HTPD Chief Tim Hak were on hand to assist the kids with operating the hose lines. It was a fun and educational time for the Township’s youth.
