Lewiston, ME - The Lewiston Fire Department responded to a reported building fire on Main Street after multiple calls were received by the Lewiston Auburn 9-1-1 Communications Center.

Firefighters arrived within minutes to find a three-story apartment building with heavy fire on exterior porches extending into the attic space. Crews initiated an aggressive interior attack while simultaneously conducting searches of approximately 20 units for occupants.

As the fire advanced through the attic, conditions deteriorated, prompting a transition to defensive operations to bring the fire under control. Firefighters operated on scene for several hours before successfully containing the incident.

An investigation conducted by Lewiston Fire Department and the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire to be accidental, caused by improperly discarded smoking materials. No injuries were reported.
