A fire that broke out in a garage was quickly extinguished in the Town of New Scotland.
The New Salem Fire Department was called to 32 New Salem South Rd on Monday, June 22, for a report of a possible structure fire just before 8:00 p.m.
The initial call was dispatched as a report of smoke inside the home, with the caller believing there was a fire inside the garage.
Chief Steve Ayers of the New Salem Fire Department arrived on scene and said he could barely see any smoke.
“Within two minutes you could start seeing smoke roll out the eaves of the house and the garage,” Ayers said.
After talking with the homeowner, Chief Ayers made his way to the garage.
“I cracked the garage door up about two feet and saw the fire was within two feet of the front door,” he said. “I opened the garage door and put it out with a fire extinguisher.”
He says there was also an air compressor that was on fire, as well as several cans of gasoline that were in close proximity to the fire inside the garage.
Ayers says the fire is believed to have been caused by a charger for an electric car that melted from the power source it was connected to.
He said the electric vehicle luckily was not inside the garage at the time of the fire.
He says the homeowner got a notification on her phone saying her vehicle wasn’t charging, leading her to unplug the vehicle and move it outside the garage before the fire broke out.
Fire damage was limited to the garage, with some smoke damage inside the house, Ayers said.
Two individuals were home at the time of the fire, however, there were no injuries reported.
New Salem Fire was also assisted on scene by the Slingerlands Fire Department.
