Springfield, MA. — June 19 — At 26–28 Wilcox St., Springfield Fire and Emergency Services responded to a working structure fire. As more resources were needed, the incident escalated to a fifth alarm. During prolonged suppression efforts, firefighters used several handlines, carried out a coordinated fire assault, and guarded surrounding structures. While crews tried to contain the fire, mutual aid agencies helped with water delivery, firefighter relief, and fire suppression.
To ensure safe and efficient operations, multi-alarm occurrences call for additional staff and equipment. Officials had not disclosed details on the number of injuries or the degree of property damage, and the cause of the fire was still being investigated.
