Boat Fire Highlights Staffing Challenges for East Greenwich Firefighters

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

East Greenwich, RI - The East Greenwich Firefighters Association IAFF Local 3328 responded to a boat fire involving multiple vessels in close proximity, where quick action was essential to prevent the fire from spreading.

With limited staffing, Engine 1 arrived with only two firefighters—well below recommended National Fire Protection Association standards—making it difficult to carry out critical tasks such as fire attack, water supply, and exposure protection.

Despite the challenges, crews brought the fire under control. The incident underscored ongoing concerns about staffing levels and the risks they pose to public safety and emergency response effectiveness.
