Mastic Beach, NY - On May 19th, the Mastic Beach Ambulance Company hosted an open house at the departments headquarters on Neighborhood Road. The Department placed numerous Apparatus and vehicles on display including ambulances, chiefs cars and first responder vehicles. The youth squad had photo boards on display as well as applications and also assisted with handing out popcorn. A local hospital sent staff to perform a “stop the bleed” demonstration where community members could practice how to help someone who may have been stabbed or shot that is bleeding a lot.
The Mastic Beach Fire Department came and joined up with members of Mastic Beach Ambulance for a vehicle extrication demonstration. Firefighters showed those in attendance their tools they use to cut a person out of a car that the doors wont open on and showed them step by step the process of how to do this. A member of the ambulance company was placed in the vehicle as a mock patient and once the rear doors were opened, Captain Shawn Hester of Mastic Beach Ambulance entered the vehicle and began working to stabilize the “ patient.”
Once extrication was completed including removal of doors, windshield and roof, the EMS crew under the direction of Chief of Department Bernard Felder moved in and placed the patient on the backboard and stretcher before loading her into the ambulance for “ transport.”
After the demonstration, families were able to stick around to talk to members, look at the rigs, get ice cream and other goodies and more.
A great day was had by the members and the community.
