June 18, 2020 – Oakmont, Allegheny County – At 2:51pm, crews were dispatched to the Oakmont Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation on Ann Street for an automatic fire alarm. Upon arrival, crews found a janitor had attempted to unclog a drain by pouring chemicals down it creating a “blast” that filled the building with hazardous fumes. Command requested the Allegheny County Haz-Mat team and additional resources as 74 patients along with staff had to be evacuated from the building. A level one mass casualty incident was declared bringing in EMS agencies from around Allegheny County including the City of Pittsburgh. Crews were able to safely evacuate all 74 patients, staging them in a parking lot across from the facility. Two Port Authority buses were brought in as temporary shelter for the residents. The Salvation Army also assisted at the scene. No injuries were reported, the building was ventilated and all residents were able to return several hours later.
